The scientific monograph "The Western Balkans in the Jaws of Insecurity" represents one of the more valuable results of the scientific research project "Security Challenges of the Western Balkan Countries in the European Security Paradigm", which the research team of the Institute for Strategic Research and external collaborators realizes in the period 2024-2025. The author's critical effort marks the manuscript for creative re-examination, especially expressed in the part of the conceptual-theoretical definition of the Balkans as a peninsular roundness, but also of certain current phenomena that are an indispensable companion of a broader problem such as permanent regional insecurity. Starting from the chapter "From the Balkans to the Western Balkans: geography, politics and Metaphor", until the final chapter, which he (again metaphorically, as at the beginning) called "The Long Journey to Europe", Colonel Dr. Milovan Subotić certainly guides us through the causes, reasons and illogicalities of the Balkan conflicts, but what is even more important, no less certain and properly articulated post-conflict period in this area. Transmission chapters that, in a logical and methodologically based way, connect the beginning and end of the narrative about the complicated algorithm of Balkan insecurities, start from the role of identity in conflicts, their abuse and widespread manipulation of their properties, but also some of the ways to overcome the problem. This study consequently opens up a new set of questions concerning a multidisciplinary response to them. Security has long been in the political sphere, politics is torn between hard-to-remove security dilemmas and demands for greater democracy, and all together are influenced by the variable that geography and history carry with them (as an inherited burden of conflict). Researchers who, after Subotic, continue to study the multidisciplinary aspects of the security of this permanently unstable region, will inevitably have to deal with this "broad picture" that Dr. Subotic directed our spotlight on and continue to search for solutions.
