The thematic collection of papers titled "Y(P)A and the Challenges of Military Professionalism 1945-1992" resulted from the project "Development of Professional Military Organization in Serbia 1804–1990: Experiences and Lessons," conducted by the Department of Military History at the Institute for Strategic Studies. Since military professionalism represents one of the key values on which all effective armed forces are based, adherence to its fundamental principles reflects the level of professional development of a country's armed forces. The thematic collection includes research by 10 historians from prominent institutions in the Republic of Serbia. The published papers aim to show the extent to which the professionalization of the armed forces of socialist Yugoslavia was achieved, highlight its limiting factors and numerous irregularities, but also the positive outcomes that the process brought. They also provide valuable experiential lessons that can be applied to improve the military organization and combat readiness of the modern Serbian Armed Forces.
