Veljko Blagojević, Milovan Subotić (eds.), Thematic Collection “The Geostrategic Future of the Balkans”, Institute of International Politics and Economics and Institute for Strategic Research, Belgrade, 2025.
The thematic collection The Geostrategic Future of the Balkans represents one of the outcomes of the research teams from the Institute for Strategic Research within the project “Security Challenges of the Western Balkan Countries in the European Security Paradigm” and the Institute of International Politics and Economics within the project “Serbia and the Challenges in International Relations in 2025.” The publishers are the Institute of International Politics and Economics and the Institute for Strategic Research.
The collection includes a series of articles that address various aspects of the geostrategic future of the Balkans, including analyses of regional security challenges, international relations, integration processes, the influence of major powers, and the strategic positioning of Balkan states. The main goal of the collection is to provide a foundation for understanding how external and internal factors shape the region’s strategic position. The publication seeks to shed light on how traditional geopolitical risks (such as great power competition and security challenges) and new risks (in the spheres of communication and information) affect the Balkans. Furthermore, it highlights the key directions through which the region can strengthen its position in the international system, as well as the opportunities and obstacles for deeper regional cooperation and integration into European structures.
The collection is not merely a theoretical or academic work. It also offers guidelines for policymakers, as well as for political and security actors in the region. It provides insights into how Balkan states can respond to global changes — whether in the context of great power competition, energy and infrastructure projects, or security and communication challenges.
Overall, The Geostrategic Future of the Balkans represents a valuable reference for all those interested in regional security, geopolitics, and the transformation of the Balkans in the 21st century.
